UberBlox
One company is getting set to launch a Kickstarter next month for something called UberBlox. UberBlox are extremely strong metal bricks which connect to one another very easily. They seem to concentrate on the fact that these bricks are perfect for making robotics and machines such as 3D printers and CNC-type machines. They even show off both a Cartesian and Delta 3D printer which were constructed from these UberBlox. The Kickstarter campaign is scheduled to launch sometime in February. Let us know what you think about this ideas. Further details on UberBlox may be found here: http://3dprint.com/38104/uberblox-build-3d-printer/
Below is an example of a 3D printer constructed from these blocks:

Does anyone think that these grownup Lego pieces will be inexpensive enough to actually build a 3D printer with, or is this just for prototyping?

well it's just gone on kickstarter so youi've got a couple of years before there'll be anything tangible - if ever :-)
