While research into bioprinting is being conducted around the world, it isn't focused solely in large-scale facilities. The Mechanical and Industrial Department of the University of Iowa opened the doors to its bioprinting lab in 2011. That lab has recently been making impressive advances in bioprinting -- starting with cells, they have now progressed to printing tissues, even printing directly on animals. Using 3D printing technologies, "biomaterials" can be produced that can perhaps progress to becoming functional tissues or organs.
