A Cornell University neurobiology research team wanted to figure out why jumping spiders jump and why their vision is so superior to that of other spiders. The problem was that whenever they tried to pin the acrobatic arachnids in place to study them, the spiders’ bodies would explode, The scientists devised a method for restraining the jumping spiders using wax and a tiny, 3D printed harness. Using the harness and some warm wax, the researchers could keep the spiders from moving and study their neural activity when they sighted prey.
