how to clear a jam
I switched to PLA today from ABS and about half way through the first layer the PLA started to get very transparent. It is supposed to be black. Eventually the PLA stopped flowing completely. Urrg! Brand new E3Dv6 hotend.
So, it is clogged and what is the best way to unclog it. Can I just heat it up and force some material through it?

You could always try a cold pull to see if it helps.

I had my 1st jam the other day in several months & used the extruder floss from makergeeks pushed through the bottom of my hexagon hotend from the bottom. http://www.makergeeks.com/exflsehounmu.html I also used their .33mm drill bit, but the floss is what pulled the plastic out of the top. I think the floss is something like a small guitar string or piano wire. That is probably what I will look when I need to replace that wire.
