3D Printing Replicas For Museum Handling
Museums can be fascinating, but for children particularly they can be rather boring. Children are interactive learners. One museum however understands this and is doing something about this problem. The Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, has hired a Dutch Designers named Maaike Roozenburg to 3D scan and print many of the objects found within their walls. More details on this story can be found here: http://3dprint.com/8980/3d-printed-museum-replicas/
What they do is 3D print molds, and then recast the objects with these molds, allowing museum-goers to handle the replica objects. Below is a picture of one of these replicas:

Virtual Archaeology at the Virtual Curation Laboratory
We actually do quite a bit of replica creation from scanned artifacts for use in museums and public archaeology. Details are posted regularly at our blog at vcuarchaeology.wordpress.com.

In the meSch project, Material EncounterS with digital Cultural Heritage, we do experiment with 3D printed replica´s, enhanced as smart objects as well. The Smart Replica project was invided to one of our meetups in Amsterdam. Recently, a three-part workshop on museums and 3D printing has just been finished in Limerick. More on how that went will be published shortly. Meanwhile, here´s a piece on VIRTUAL AND SMART REPLICAS – WHAT CAN THEY DO FOR HERITAGE?,
written by Merel van der Vaart from the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam. http://mesch-project.eu/virtual-and-smart-replicas-what-can-they-do-for-heritage/
