Disney Research has recently created a new technique which involves 3D printing to create cable networks for making animated figures come to life. They used an Objet350 Connex 3, printing with both Vero White and Vero Black materials. As examples of their new method, the researchers created a functional 2D puppet, as well as a gripper tool and a robotic hand that even includes an opposable thumb. The team explained their new technique at a presentation at SCA 2017 on July 28th. They continue to work on this project and improve ways to move the animated characters via progressive technologies that include 3D printing.
