How to design gears for automatic and manual transmissions?
How do I design gears for automatic and manual transmissions? I tried different programs for designing gears and most of them are not suitable for designing gears for automatic and manual transmissions. How do I create gear ratios while keeping the distance between shafts same?

In the professional field you would use software like KISSsoft, which can semi-automate most of this process depending on loads, gear ratios, and many other factors. http://kisssoft.ch/english/products/kisssoft.php
As I understand it, this can be integrated with various cad solutions.
Doing so with manual calculations it is possible to specify the correct diameters and tooth profiles if you fully understand the incredible complexity of gears.

That link might be a good start as it references a maximum space allowance which should translate to the fixed centers you would need in a transmission.
