Following your train of thought, why do they still sell pens and pencils when you can buy a computer printer for <$50? The answer is, of course, pens/pencils are a completely different tool than a computer printer just as this pen is a completely different tool than a 3D printer.

I could see this in the hands of kids for doodling (yea, yea, hot tip, whatever. If I can trust my 10 and 12y granddaughters to use pistols and rifles at the range, I can trust them with a hot tip). For serious models, no. For fun, yes. I could easily see this as being a tool for elementary through high school aged kids doing science or engineering projects. Would I buy one for myself? Certainly not. But for the granddaughters? Yea, I could see them having a blast with one. And I could see it perfectly at home in GD12's engineering club at school.

I see it uses 3mm filament (according to their FAQ) but of course voids your warranty if you use anything but theirs.

Their FAQ has a few titillating tidbits....

Can the 3Doodler print toffee, chocolate, sugar, etc?Oh boy, if only it did! We love the creativity, although the work involved to do this is not insubstantial, and significant changes would be needed to the workings of the 3Doodler. Will it happen down the line? We’re keeping it in mind, so watch this space and we’ll be sure to let you know if/when it happens.

Can anyone say "Circuit writing?"
Can the 3Doodler use conductive ABS plastic? We haven’t had time to test conductive plastic yet, but another way of doing this would be to use conductive paint with your regular 3Doodles.

As we have mentioned elsewhere, 3Doodler should only be used with filament approved by us. Use of other materials not approved by us may result in damage to your pen or injury to you, and will unfortunately void your warranty.

Guess where they are targeting it eventually (can you say Apple)..
