When you mention sandpaper, are you using the same material for support and then sanding after removing the support portion?
In S3D when you open the process settings click on 'advanced options' in lower left, you should see a bunch of tabs now about mid window. Select the temperature tab, here you can make setpoints for both extruders and the bed.

I do use same material for support as the print most times, though with the PeTG i have I use abs supports, because the PeTG costs more. Some 400 grit emery based paper is best. And all the material I have used so far (PLA, ABS, and PeTG) respond very well to wetsanding, do it the same ya would inbetween layers of auto paint ya.
If you have the funds or access to a rig sandblasting also works fairly well on builds that sanding is not an option. But you need to kinda know how to sandblast, and you have to use a very light (and small) glass bead on a VERY low p.s.i..... 5psi is pushing the upper limit. Even at 3psi its easy to mess up a build if your not fairly skilled with a blaster.
There is also a method called vapor-bathing that works ok, but not to be used on super detailed builds, as it will reduce some definition, though not much.
