Nearly 2,000 years ago, hundreds of people were killed instantly when a blast of superheated air belched forth by Mount Vesuvius ravaged through the nearby town of Herculaneum. The searing air caused damage to their bones, but also left them preserved for archaeologists to rediscover in the 1980s. Now, as part of a joint project between Italy and Brazil, one of those skulls has gotten a facial reconstruction treatment, revealing, for the first time, what one of the victims of this disaster may have looked like.
