It has been widely noted that there is a large disparity between the numbers of men and the numbers of women in high-tech industries. The methods by which we address this inequity are complex and multi-faceted. It requires a great deal more than simply suggesting that 3D printing can make girly things as well as toys for boys. Instead, there is a need for a fundamental reconceptualization of the way in which we produce makers and consumers and a recognition that the construction nature of gender requires more than a superficial pinkification of the things we can make.
