GE and the US Department of Energy (DOE) are currently working together in a program through next summer which focuses on a truly viable way to desalinate ocean water. Using GE’s technology already in place in power plants, they are researching ways to scale down turbine technology from enormous components to miniaturized 3D printing ones that will allow for the freezing of salt water inside the components and the ultimate, affordable purification of water. This could have huge, extremely positive ramifications in terms of the water supply for the whole world, in years to come, should they be able to prove it completely feasible.
