Dr. Anthony Atala and his team at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine are working on growing new human cells, tissues, and organs. Dr. Atala and his team say the fact that they've created life-size human organs which include bladders and vaginas doesn't mean they plan to build a full-sized, functional human heart. The team are also responsible for the “body-on-a-chip” program, a miniaturized human system which will ultimately be used to model the response of the human body to contagions like the Ebola virus or deadly warfare gases such as sarin and ricin.
