Students from ISU learned this year firsthand how 3D printing can benefit the automotive industry—and specifically that of racecars—as they decided to design and then fabricate an intake, dashboard, and heel cup support system for the driver. These parts were created on a Stratasys Fortus 450mc with ULTEM 1010 as the chosen material for the intake, while they chose ABS for the other two parts. In creating this year’s Cyclone vehicle to compete against other college teams in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International Formula car competition, the students learned how customization makes a huge difference with 3D printing, along with speed in production, and affordability.
