Yes that is why you need one. That way all the magic alchemy happens.

lol, the philosophers stone was actually an ultimate catalyst. The idea was you could uses it to make all your other reactions work while the 'stone' itself was untouched.
paladium and platinum come fairly close. I can't afford either :-)
