The idea of the pebbles is interesting. I wonder if sand would work as it is just a bunch of much smaller pebbles and still porous.

A good cheap alternative would be to get some aluminum window screen at your local hardware store. easy to form into a base, with only a need to weight it to keep the prints down. some cheap fishing weights attached to the edges would handle that.

I am still liking the small wire mesh but in steel because after you remove the model it would be easy to recover the mesh by removing the printed "base". Also I would be able to make it into an inverted cone or tube so I could anchor supports to it if I find that those are needed. The main reason for wanting a smaller mesh is that it would add allot of flexability to designing supports and the base, you wouldn't have to worry to much about not attaching to a wire. JMHO
