3D printed UAVs are taking the skies by storm--but only after they successfully come off a 3D printer. Freelance mechanical engineer Erwin Touwen has recently been acquainting himself with 3D printing technology, as he is beginning to work on designs for aircraft to print on his Leapfrog Creatr Duo 3D printer. Touwen designed a UAV in Autodesk Inventor, generated the G-code using Simplify 3D, and set off on a trial-and-error learning curve in bringing his UAV into the skies. On test day, the UAV launched up, but crashed within seconds of flight. It's back to the drawing board for Touwen and a Dutch RC forum as they work to redesign the craft to make it fly better.
