ScrapRap $50 3D Printer
Xander Goldstein is building a 3D printer out materials he salvaged from dot matrix printers and scanners and a pile of scrap wood. He calls it a ScrapRap, and Goldstein says, at least to this point, the only items he's needed to purchase were the extruder, some threaded rod and a ramps board. While his device is very much a work in progress, there have been a number of notable successes which were built from junk and thus, were very inexpensive to produce. Perhaps the most famous, a printer built by African Systems Engineer Afate Gnikou, was largely constructed from the plentiful e-waste he found in his home country of Togo. No frame? Uh, that'll wobble a lot. :-)
But yes, one can build a printer for almost nothing. My last one, a Mantis Electron, did cost just some $200 with all new parts. And it works perfectly.
