Pausing a Makerbot AND lower the buildplate to insert an object
Does anyone know how I can lower the build plate after pausing in order to insert an object in a void?

If you have a specific place you would like to pause, I would split the GCode at that point and do a a little custom coding to move the z-axis down->pause for placement->return z-axis up->continue print.

Thanks again, GOC
The next day it dawned on me, that it's as simple as hitting PAUSE and CHANGE FILAMENT, which lowers the build plate. It's not exact, but just going by the % of the print done, it was good enough for what I wanted to do.
