abs is more 'crude' but more strength and higher melting temp. pla has a better 'resolution' but weaker, if you are into replacement parts, abs, but for more detailed hobby creations, definately pla

I'm a bit curious, what filaments can print without a heated bed other than PLA? I saw a demo recently of nylon being printed directly onto wood and it appeared to stick magnificently. I've also seen conflicting stuff about printing PET with or without a heated bed, so I'm not sure what to believe on that. Any others?

ABS or PLA
It all depends of what kind of prints you make. PLA is rigid and ABS flexible. ABS can be melted, polished, shaped and it fits perfectly nestable parts, for example.
