Part solid 3D print.
I would like to know what method to use in order to make a part of an object solid while the rest is hollow (whatever the fill density is set to).

S3D let you create multiple process so you can have different infill % at different layers.. Other than the, you would need to design the part in such a manner which is how one should go about this if they are doing the designing.

I'm using SketchUp to create the design and then Wanhao (came with my printer) to create the GCODE.
If I design the object with shapes hidden internally, would the shapes get printed (even though they are not seen)?
I thought this may strengthen the area needed.

no. A solid object stl is generated as a solid object. You would need you have voids where you did not want infill and the rest as normal - ie: solid.
So kind of what you said - but in reverse.
hollow out the parts you don't want solid and leave the rest - which you can then have as empty or solid as you like.
