Origami and 3D Printing Combine in Self-Folding Medical Implants
Researchers at Delft University of Technology are working with shape-changing polymers and 3D printers to create medical implants that begin as flat sheets but, in conjunction with the properties of the materials, self-fold into the necessary shapes once in place in the body. The implants aren't quite ready for deployment, but they hold a great deal of promise and demonstrate yet another way that advanced manufacturing technology can enhance human health.
