All-Woman Crew Honors Memory of Space Shuttle Challenger 30 Years Later
Thirty years ago, the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart in midair, only 73 seconds after it launched. All seven crew members were killed, including Christa McAuliffe, a teacher who joined the crew as a payload specialist as part of NASA's "Teachers in Space Project." Her memory, as well as that of her fellow crew members, is being honored by the all-female crew of the HERA IX mission, a simulated mission at NASA's Human Exploration Research Analog. The month-long mission will simulate a mission to a near-Earth asteroid for the purpose of researching the human impacts of space travel, as well as providing educational outreach to students.
