MakerBot and FirstBuild Team for 3D Printing Icebox Challenge

Refrigerators are ubiquitous: probably one of the most useful and central appliances in daily household use. But could there be something more to them? MakerBot and FirstBuild have teamed up to challenge you to answer that question. The Icebox Challenge -- running through November 23 -- is open for submissions of designs that can be created on a fifth generation MakerBot Replicator 3D printer that would be functional inside a refrigerator. The first-place winning design will earn the prize of a choice between a MakerBot Replicator Desktop 3D Printer or a MakerBot Replicator 2X Experimental 3D Printer, with second- and third-place entries also bringing home prizes. Here lies the issue, I find myself emotionally torn. On one hand I would love to enter, yet on the other hand I hate to think of anything I've designed being printed on a Gen5 let alone designing something specifically that can be printed on it.

This year’s 193 entries for the 2014 FirstBuild/MakerBot IceBox Challenge have been pared down to 20 3D printable designs being highlighted currently, as they have extended the announcement of one winner to January 5^th at International CES. The 20 finalists exhibit great ideas that are not only fun — some whimsical — but they are also utilitarian and aesthetically pleasing, with the added bonus that the 3D designs can be downloaded and 3D printed at home.
