US Government 3D Prints Dog Noses to Study Science of Smell
The National Institute of Standards and Technology, the federal agency that collaborates with industry in the development and application of technology, measurements, and standards. Researchers at the NIST are using a Connex 500 3D printer from Stratasys to 3D print anatomically accurate models of dogs’ noses -- artificial, 3D printed replicas of the nose of a female Labrador retriever. The research team is using the 3D noses to understand how the sniffing mechanism works so they can collaborate with industry to develop more sophisticated, non-canine vapor sampling equipment, specifically for explosives detection.
