MIT researchers and students came together in a multi-faceted project at MIT, demonstrating the usefulness of 3D printing in information visualization through a 3D printed model of MIT campus, called LuminoCity. The LuminoCity 3D printed model was used to demonstrate big data analysis using Twitter DecaHose, through illuminating data and identifying 'clusters.' The 3D printed model of the campus was also used, concurrently, as a demonstration of a project recently completed by MIT students--CLAIRITY. CLAIRITY is a project designed to monitor air pollution on campus, with sensor nodes posted at 24 locations at MIT. By integrating sensor nodes and a computer interface into LuminoCity, students and researchers were able to illuminate the sensor nodes according to data like air quality.
