I made in 3d the negative of the model (picture enclosed) and then printed at 100% fill. I am still not sure how durable these will be long term but so far really impressed on what PLA can do. Used a clamp between two pieces of wood as the press. I haven't purchased a real press yet for my leather working.

For your efforts I would say just keep trying. They do work but for me it's still trial and error. I had to print the skull twice because the first one was too shallow.
