the weird thing about the print noxxle and distance from the bed is that:

1) Much too close- nothing happens, extruder will often start to 'click' - nozzle is blocked by the bed and back pressure causes the extruder to skip.
2) too close, filament either doesn't stick or is badly flattened - also flat first layers can look wrinkled. Can cause nozzle to blob and drag filament around because the nozzle stays in contact.
3) Just right - nice sharp. thin looking bead, sticks well first layer is flat.
4) little bit too high. Often outlines don't print correctly and any fine first layer parts often don't stick. Print will 'usually' work, but can often come detached and bottom layers is not 'clean'.
