3D Printing Research and Development to Soar ?
Within the next couple of years we should begin seeing 3D printing mature to an industry dominated by DIY startups, to one in which multi-billion dollar companies take control, spending billions of dollars on research and development. As this happens we will see exponential progress within the industry, surpassing that of which we have already seen in the last two years.
It will be interesting to see just how the large corporations get involved. From Google, to GE to Autodesk, to even IBM Intel and Apple, 3D printing will no longer be the business of just a few larger companies, and a bunch of small start ups. More details about these predictions can be found here: http://3dprint.com/7599/billions-rd-3d-printing/

Of course it will happen. This is a exponentially expanding technology. Every company that has a core technology of moving parts will jump in.
First, it will be all about extruding more materials faster and mixed materials. Then they will go after the protection of proprietary filaments and pastes to insure a steady stream of income.
Printers will cost $100, plastic will cost $50 a pound. Liquid chrome will cost $150 a pound.
It'll be a fun ride.
