A team of professors from the University of South Alabama, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and Singapore University of Technology and Design recently carried out an experimental cyberattack on a partially 3D printed drone to demonstrate the damage that 3D printer hackers could potentially cause. Through a phishing attack, they accessed the file for a DJI drone rotor blade, altered it in an undetectable way, then printed it. The drone crashed during a test flight, just as they had expected. The researchers, who documented the project in a paper, warn that if similar tactics were carried out on a facility that manufactures airplane parts, for instance, the results could be disastrous.
