Researchers at LLNL have made some major strides in 3D printing, which has progressed straight to 4D printing. Using temperature gradients to manipulate shapes, the scientists learned that they could print complex structures that morph according to their environment, staying as they are with constant stress and decreased temperature, and then transitioning when exposed to higher heat or an electrical current. With the potential to make such complex structures, these new processes may offer great impact in the aerospace, medical, and electronics industries.
