DARPA has come up with an idea that might blow your mind at first, but the more you delve into their concept, the greater sense it makes. Researchers are currently working on funding for a program called the Engineered Living Materials (ELM) program. Here, the DARPA team certainly hopes to propel the construction industry into the future with materials that are basically alive and able to ‘heal,’ repair, and control their environments, from house repairs and cooling issues, to a driveway that cleans itself up when something like an oil stain occurs. This requires building a whole new class of materials that are bioengineered, with a process quite similar to bioprinting, using scaffolds and cells created in a lab.
