University Researchers Team Up, Use MakerBot 3D Printer to Make Hydrogels
Researchers from University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Carnegie Mellon University are teaming up to develop a method to better diagnose breast cancer using a converted MakerBot Replicator. The researchers altered the MakerBot to 3D print using biological materials in a stable hydrogel material that could replicate breast ducts, the location of tumors that could potentially develop into a fast growing type of breast cancer. The research team was awarded a two-year $800,000 grant from the US Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program of the Department of Defense to develop their custom 3D printers.
