When a pair of recreational cavers squeezed themselves through a very narrow, vertical chute into a larger open chamber, they were surprised to find it littered with fossils. The research team that followed on their heels was able to carefully study the 1,550 fossils and officially describe them as a new species of hominid: Homo Naledi. Those fossils are now the subject of research being conducted by a student at Central Michigan University, who will use the campus' MakerBot Innovation Lab to 3D print the fossils for comparison with later homonid fossils to attempt to add context to the extinct species.
