The use of 3D printed models in the medical world has been further expanded for the use of studying the knee and issues stemming from patellar maltracking, which causes knee pain, abnormal movement, and array of joint problems. With the use of several models representing the parts of the knee, researchers were able to compare it to that of cadavers and saw that it yielded very similar results. With such a positive study, they realized that indeed they would be able to use such models for customizing treatment plans—all to great benefit over traditional methods as the 3D printed models can be made specific to the patient and are very affordable to manufacture.
