Surgeons at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children are benefitting with better training practices due to 3D printing as they use radiology scans to created detailed 3D models of actual patient’s hearts. This allows for ‘faux’ surgeries that allow them to train with little stress--but a lot of information about the patient’s condition, specific heart, and how to proceed. While these models are already a great help, Dr. Glen Van Arsdell, the head of cardiovascular surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children, and Dr. Shi-Joon Yoo, a cardiac radiologist at Sick Kids, see huge potential in the future for this technology to change the way they perform before, during, and after surgery.
