If you were wondering how to incorporate strands of hair or bristles into your 3D printing projects, researchers at Carnegie Mellon have you covered. Taking inspiration from the way that fragments and strings trail being a glue gun, the team of researchers has figured out how to extrude threadlike features from the 3D printer, as well as programming the G-code to produce exactly what the user wants in terms of style. They have presented their research in a paper--‘3D Printed Hair: Fused Deposition Modeling of Soft Strands, Fibers and Bristles,’ recently published in UIST ’15--and will be giving a speed at the UIST 2015 symposium in Charlotte, NC on November 11th.
