Technology research and advisory firm Gartner Inc. is forecasting worldwide 3D printer shipments to exceed 496,475 units by the end of 2016. That is an increase of 103% over the projected sale of 244,533 units by the end of 2015. Cost will play a large role in that increase as by 2019 sub-$1,000 3D printers are expected to make up 40.7% of units sold for all printers priced under $2,500. Currently they only account for 25.5%.
