Inspired by Theo Jansen's famous Strandbeest design, Charles Ford has created a unique take on the design concept. He set about designing a light-seeking walking Strandbeest robot that includes motors from a kit he found on eBay. Designed in SketchUp, Ford's design uses the kit's motors--although the leg mechanisms could have been 3D printed--along with 3D printed parts. The robot's sensors guide it toward the brightest light source, while whiskers alert it to running into obstacles so it can automatically reverse away.
