BREAKING: 3MF Consortium Revealed by Microsoft to push 3MF File Format

Microsoft will be unveiling today details of a new 3D printing consortium along with the adoption of their 3MF file format by this consortium. 3DPrint was able to obtain details on this announcement. The consortium will be called the 3MF Consortium and include the following members: Microsoft, HP, Shapeways, Autodesk, Dassault Systems, netfabb and SLM Solutions. Pretty sure drm will be top of the requirement.

I'm in two minds. One - the industry needs a secure and upto date file system.
But - microsoft ?

Still I suppose it's not google or apple :-)

It will be interesting to see how this goes up against the ISO/ASTM backed amf format that is trying to gain traction.

Today, the 3MF Consortium has announced a new level of membership, with the Associate level allowing for benefits such as early access to changes in specifications, participation in an online communication forum, password-protected .3MF document access, and the use of the 3MF logo on their products (that meet provided requirements). Associate members will be listed on the 3MF Consortium website. Annual dues are $1,000 for Associate members, and an application can be filled out to join at this level; the Consortium may expand the offerings for Associate members in the future. Ultimaker announced today that it has become the twelfth company to join the 3MF Consortium at the founding membership level. The Cconsortium, which consists of a number of companies collaborating on the development and implementation of the new 3MF file format, was created in April and has been steadily growing since then.
