    Occipital Skanect, v 1.8

When startup company Occipital came out with their Structure Sensor iPad 3D scanner, it quickly became a Kickstarter favorite, raising over $1.2 million. The device runs Skanect software which translates information from a pair of infrared LEDs that drive the same sensor that's included in Microsoft's Kinect and other devices. Now Occipital has released a new version of Skanect, v 1.8, which includes improvements in resolution and color rendering for 3D printing applications. Below is a look at the difference in scan quality between Skanect 1.7 and 1.8:

It's a remarkable improvement even though the scan photos used to make the texture are VGA low res 640x480. Many are disappointed since the iPad camera can deliver such high quality photos and reviewing the structure forum you'll find how many are using a variety of workflow procedures to bring up the texture quality. The Skanect 1.8 software is improved over 1.7 and thankfully can be used to improve existing 1.7 scans, but the results are still far inferior to ItSeez3D because of the high quality textures it delivers through it's cloud service. Many of us are still waiting for hi-res textures from Skanect.
