In 2009, Italian designer Giuseppe Randazzo created an homage to English artist Richard Long. Long is known for his landscape art in which stones are placed as he walks through landscapes around the world. Long was first recognized as an important contributor to the art scene in the late 1960s and continues to work today. Randazzo’s tribute came in the form of a digital creation entitled Stone Fields in which a 3D model of stones carefully placed in a circle was released on the web. In the intervening years, technology has advanced to the point where the digital model can be 3D printed and yet it is still not able to rival the complexity of stones produced by nature herself.
