A recent research paper indicated that using a cheap Makerbot Replicator 3D printer to print medical equipment used during surgery could allow for cheaper surgeries in poor countries. Amazingly a 3D printed retractor, printed out of PLA on a Makerbot Replicator performed just as good as a $47 stainless steel version. The other interesting fact was that since the plastic is heated while being extruded, it comes out of the printer sterile.
