At the University of Michigan, medical resident Cher Zhao had the opportunity to practice a complex cartilage graft procedure for an infant born with a windpipe malfunction, using 3D printed models. Recognition of the benefits of such practice for students of medicine is growing, as is the understanding that 3D printed models can help already practicing surgeons keep up their surgical skills for procedures that may be few and far between. As part of the growing body of knowledge regarding the use of 3D printed models in medical education, the results of a study involving just such procedures has been published by researchers at UM's Medical School in a medical journal.
