Researchers at LLNL have developed a new 3D printed metamaterial that shrinks rather than expanding when exposed to heat. Members of their Additive Manufacturing Initiative are using lightweight metamaterials to deal with the issue of thermal mismatching. They see these new materials as working in applications such as dentistry, filling in gaps in bridges, and helping to eliminate structural issues that can happen during thermal expansion.
