Shirley and Della Anderson have been together for fifty years now, and for most of that enjoying careers, children, grandchildren, and a life in Indiana; however, when husband Shirley was diagnosed with cancer after finding a tumor on his tongue, everything suddenly became very challenging. Radiation wreaked havoc on Shirley’s s facial area, and a portion of his jaw had to be removed to save his life. He could not eat solid food, and had to use a small writing board to communicate. When he met maxillofacial prosthetics specialist Dr. Bellicchi, everything changed. Through trial and error, they ended up using a Formlabs 3D printer to create a silicone prosthetic that is lightweight and comfortable enough for Shirley to wear for long periods. He’s been able to trade in his surgical mask for the prosthetic, and Dr. Bellicchi has formed a special team, seeking out similar challenging cases.
