We may all begin to see the world of spiders in a much different light soon if recent research and the resulting creations of a team at Princeton keep gaining momentum. Livio Dalloro from the Product Design, Modeling and Simulation Research group in the Automation and Control Technology Field at Siemens Corporate Technology (CT) has led his group of researchers in a project, ongoing since 2014, to create autonomous 3D printed spider bots that actually work in a large group as 3D printers themselves, able to navigate through large projects as a team, each with their own designated work area. Each ‘spider’ has its own calibrated extruder, and they currently are limited to printing with polylactic acid. The autonomous 3D printers have great potential for growth as well as application in multiple industries, from aerospace on.
