cheapo digital calipers have data cable socket.

So any idea where I can get a cable, and does anyone know of any software that works with these cheapo calipers and a cable ?

wanted a pair for the house, save me going out to the workshop everytime I want to measure anything in the house.
    £6.50 inc p'n'p and a cable socket.

Can't find any cables online though.

Anybody have any ideas on whether the socket is of any use ?

You probably need one of these:

I ordered another of these calipers a few weeks ago off ebay and intend to take it apart to make some digital slides for my lathe so in a few weeks I will probably be able to give you much more info about the interface if mine has one inside somewhere, I don't think it is brought out but they all use hte same internals these things.

lol - what I'm looking for is a ready made usb cable to plug one end into the calipers and the other into the computer.

So nope, not really that helpful but does probably answer my question. ie: the socket is not really going to be of any use to me :-)

I am sure there are greater forces at work here. Having not even thought about the caliper I ordered from China sometime in the past it arrived today and it does have a data port on.

It needs more than a cable. There are two lines, one clock and one data, the data bit is clocked by the clock line so no easy USB <> "whatever" will do the job, it does need a micro in there to catch the data and convert it.

I will be making one and will probably use an ESP8266 12E to do the work unless I cannot achieve the speed in which case I will use a PIC.

I have absolutely no idea what that means :-)
    Fortunately you do, lol

There was an article last year (I think) about a company who had developed a 'scanning' probe and software. If the software is available you could probably hook one of these calipers up to it.

Wel buggered if i can find it - this forum needs an index !
Just to the articles if nothing else.
That should be fairly to do.
