The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology wanted to create a show-stopping display for the LASER World of PHOTONICS 2015 event in Munich, Germany. The resulting idea to build the word LIGHT out of lightweight materials, with each letter standing at 2 meters, was born. The idea was passed on to Materialise, which utilized its design, engineering, and software specialists to help compress the largest data set in Materialise's history. This data set was sent to the company's Mammoth Stereolithography printers, which are built to handle large projects. The display definitely revealed what stereolithography printing can achieve, shining light on the future of photonics and 3D printing/additive manufacturing for all to see.
