In 2001, 27-year-old volunteer firefighter Patrick Hardison was severely burned on a call; 71 surgeries had saved his life, but left him without eyelids, a nose, hair, or good quality of life. On August 14, 2015, a team of more than 100 medical professionals, led by Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, began what would be a 26-hour surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center. The procedure, described as being the most complex in the world, was a full facial transplant that included bone, muscle, veins, arteries, and skin--and it was helped by 3D modeling and 3D printing.
